The Fairy Story Level Design

Level Design:

There are four levels, but the last one is just focusing on the narrative and it is a secret ending.

The first level is the tutorial level, where players will learn all the monsters and platforms they will encounter, and meet their friend “Yamaha.” In this chapter, players will think of themselves as Alexa, because Joyce thinks her mom wants her to become a person like Alexa. Everything that “Yamaha” told the player is true, and this is not the first time player wake up from this place.

It is a loop. If players pay attention to the conversation, they will find out that the piano never said “Your name is Alexa” or things like that. “I’m Alexa” is referred to by the player themselves. Besides, the piano’s word indicates that this is not the first time player wakes up in the inner space (the piano said something like: “You did it this time,” which indicates that there are some other rounds.) Players will collect the first essentials easily on this level if they go left first.

The second level is one that is dangerous. There are enemies and traps that need to pay attention. Piano said, “four is not a lucky number” indicating that the fourth platform toward the third essential is actually a falling platform. Also, this line works with the next level’s myth, and I’ll talk about it later on this page. Narratively, players will keep thinking of themselves as Alexa and exploring the map. The essentials are actually telling the core memory of Joyce and trying to wake her up.

The last level is a puzzle-solving level. Here, players need to find three health potions, and the hint is attached to the potion. Players will get three hints and make final decisions either entering the top door or the lower door. There are three hints:

  1. Double bad luck guide you to the lies.
  2. Spirited away and hourglass
  3. Hell to live
  4. Four is not a lucky number (from the second level)

First, look at the spirited away and hourglass. Spirited away indicated the reverse world (the conversation said that) and the hourglass is also an indicator of the reverse. In the reverse world, the lower one is actually the higher one, and the top one is actually the bottom one. Second, Hell to live and reverse this line, we got “Haven to death”, hence the haven indicates death. Heave indicates the top one, but in the reverse world is the lower one. Hence, the player should enter the top door. Alternatively, focusing on the double bad luck guides you to the lies. First, reverse it, we got a double bad luck guide to the truth, and 4 is bad luck according to the description from the previous level. Hence, double bad luck is 8. In the map, there are 8 traps and 8 elder enemy on the lower ground, hence double bad luck indicate the lower ground. Hence the line indicates that the lower level guides the truth. However, in the reverse world, the lower level is actually the top one, hence the top door will show the truth.

Hence, the player should enter the top door.

Essentials:

The first essential shows Emily and Joyce learning piano, and show their relationship as well as the song “Fairy Story.” The first essential is on the tutorial level.

The second essential shows a cancer report, which is Emily’s cancer report. This is on the second level, and everyone should find it since it is just on the second floor.

The third essential shows the job of acting, which indicates Joyce’s job of acting as Alexa. It is on the second level, and the player should jump to the right of the moving platform and jump through the fourth platform in order to get that essential.

The last essential is on the puzzle level, and that indicates Emily’s last wish. It is on the corner of the last level, and if the player explores the map, they will find it.

Secret Ending:

When players collect all essentials, they will enter the secret ending. Players will learn the truth and jump off from the ground to real life by the end. The prerequisite for entering this level is to collect all the essentials.
